Water Leak Detection & Correlation Services

CAPE SPC are the UK’s only canine assisted water leak detection team.

Water Leak detection dogs (WLDD) and correlations services.

We provide a leak detection service using detection dogs to enhance and improve the way water companies currently locate leaks in their network in the field.

The service we offer provides the following benefits to our clients:

  • Reduction in time taken and costs incurred in investigating and locating points of leakage
  • Reduction in cost and time taken to repair points of leakage
  • Reduction in supply losses due to leakage

CAPE SPC in the News

Scottish Water is deploying a team of specially trained dogs to help locate leaks in pipes in rural areas where the water does not always show on the surface.

The Service and Our Approach

We use Cape SPC personnel supported by trained detection dogs to enhance and improve the way water companies currently locate leaks in their network in the field.

We carry out visual field inspections of the line and the adjacent land and at the same time deploy trained detection dogs to detect the presence of escaped mains water. Our detection dogs are trained by Cape SPC to indicate on a variety of scents associated with treated mains water, including chlorine and other substances used in the water treatment process.

We have used canine detection successfully to locate significant water mains leakage points for Water Companies within the UK and have saved millions of liters of water.

We provide two types of location services

Proactive Detection

where our clients employ us to survey lines on a pre-planned basis

Our Proactive leak location services work in the following way:

  1. A contract for pre-planned surveys is put in place and a programme of surveys is with the client before we commence work. The client provides a six-figure grid reference for the start and end points of each planned linear survey required and an electronic map / plan showing the line to be inspected.
  2. We carry out a joint risk and access assessment with our client (including access into private land, etc.) before deployment of resource to each search area. Prior information and checks carried out by the client are used where possible.
  3. We survey the route of each line. The rate of inspection is normally 4-6 kilometres per day in open farmland with uninterrupted access.
  4. On locating a leak, we have the capability to run a correlation for a secondary confirmation is a water sample isn’t obtainable.
  5. We issue the client with a six-figure grid reference of the located leak along with a photograph and a marked-up version of the map / plan.
  6. Within 48 hours of UU personnel (or their representatives) confirming the location of the leak in the field, the client confirms this as a “VERIFIED LEAK” to Cape SPC. If the client is unable to locate the leak in the field, they notify us of this and we agree together how to proceed.

Reactive Detection

where our clients employ us on a call-off basis to respond to notified, suspected or observed leaks in the field

Our Reactive leak location services work in the following way:

  1. A call-off contract is put in place
  2. We receive notification of a potential leak. The client provides a six-figure grid reference for the start and end points of the linear survey required and an electronic map / plan showing the line to be inspected.
  3. We carry out a joint risk and access assessment with our client (including access in to private land, etc.) before deployment of resource to the search area. Prior information and checks carried out by the client are used where possible.
  4. We dispatch resource to the site of the potential leak within a pre-agreed timescale. This is normally within 48 hours of receiving notification. Response times to simultaneous or overlapping call outs may vary and are agreed on a case by case basis.
  5. We survey the route of the line. The rate of inspection is normally 4 kilometres per day in open farmland with uninterrupted access.
  6. On locating a leak, we have the capability to run a correlation for a secondary confirmation is a water sample isn’t obtainable.
  7. We issue the client with a six-figure grid reference of the located leak along with a photograph and a marked-up version of the map / plan.
  8. Within 48 hours of UU personnel (or their representatives) confirming the location of the leak in the field, the client confirms this as a “VERIFIED LEAK” to Cape SPC. If the client is unable to locate the leak in the field, they notify us of this and we agree together how to proceed.

Watch Snipe and Denzel help find leaking water mains for United Utilities

United Utilities is deploying a team of specially trained dogs to help locate leaks in pipes in rural areas where the water does not always show on the surface.

Two spaniels, called Snipe and Denzel, aged two and three, have been trained by ex-military dog handlers to detect the smell of chlorine in treated water.

Our Recent Experience

  • United Utilities - Cumbria

    United Utilities - Cumbria

Positive indication received from WDD Snipe. Leak confirmed and repaired by United Utilities – Saving approximately £44000 per year.
  • United Utilities - Wigan
