Conservation & Biosecurity

Applying canine detection science to emerging environmental and biosecurity challenges.

Canine-Led, Evidence-Based Approach

Emerging Detection Capability for Conservation and Biosecurity

CAPE is developing a new range of canine led detection services designed to support conservation, environmental protection and biosecurity risk assessment.

These services represent an expansion of CAPE’s specialist detection capability beyond established sectors, applying the same structured methodology, quality standards and operational discipline to ecological risk detection.

Conservation and biosecurity threats are often difficult to detect using traditional monitoring methods. Detection dogs can identify extremely small scent signatures associated with biological material, invasive species and environmental indicators that are otherwise easily overlooked through manual inspection.

CAPE’s conservation and biosecurity capability is currently in development, with pilot activity and partnership work being undertaken to support responsible deployment.

Operational Advantages

Why Canine Detection Has Conservation Potential

Early identification of hidden risk

Environmental and biosecurity threats are often present before visible indicators appear. Canine detection allows these risks to be identified earlier in the monitoring process.

Non-invasive surveying across sensitive sites

Detection can be carried out without soil disturbance, habitat damage or reliance on invasive sampling methods.

Effective coverage at scale

Dogs can survey large or complex areas efficiently, making them well suited to landscapes where manual monitoring would be resource intensive.

Evidence-led, auditable outcomes

CAPE’s approach prioritises structured deployment, documentation and reporting, enabling detection outcomes to support decision making, assurance and future monitoring.

A Proven, Evidence‑Led Detection Process

From initial identification through to confirmation, every stage is driven by verified data, supporting accurate action and clear reporting.

Environmental & Conservation Monitoring

Supporting early identification of ecological risk

CAPE’s canine teams may support environmental monitoring programmes where traditional observation methods struggle to detect early indicators of change, biological presence or ecological stress.

Potential applications include:

This capability is intended to complement existing survey and monitoring approaches rather than replace them.

Biosecurity & Plant Health Detection

Emerging capability for biological risk identification

CAPE is developing detection capability to support biosecurity and plant health monitoring where early identification of biological threats can support rapid and effective response.

Areas under exploration currently include:

As work in this area develops, scientific validation and partnership collaboration will remain essential.
